Year 6

Welcome to our class page!

Here you will find useful information to help support your child in Y6 such as core subject knowledge organisers, handy hints for reading at home with Y6, expected academic standards for the end of KS2 & Y6 and weekly homework information. Detailed Curriculum outlines will also be uploaded each half-term so you can see which aspects your child will be studying over the following term.

Our new Maths helper videos are now up and running and available on our APAT YouTube channel. These videos explain how Maths is taught in our school and across the APAT trust;  they are an excellent resource to support children's learning at home. Click on the link below to access.

We will also be updating the Y6 Gallery pages with photos of our learning and examples of some outstanding work throughout the year to share with you.

Please do not hesitate to contact us either via the class email or the school office.

Homework:

Reading is a whole school priority. It is incredibly important that we work together to foster a love of reading for pleasure and make sure that our children are not just excellent decoders but understand what they are reading too, especially as they begin to embrace the more challenging texts expected in Y6.

Children in Y6 are expected to read at least four times a week and have their diaries signed by a parent. Tricky or new words can be noted in their reading diaries to enable the children to investigate their meaning. If your child does not find any new words in their text - the book is not challenging enough!

If you are stuck for some inspiration, check out the '100 books to read before you leave Y6' at the bottom of this page - how many can you read this year?

Homework dates:

Weekly Spelling and M.A homework will be set every FRIDAY. Details of their tasks will be explained in class and students will bring their Homework Folders home to complete the work independently. Homework is due in the following FRIDAY, it can be handed in anytime before then but please make sure that your child has a copy of their spelling words to practise at home!

If your child is absent, their homework will be available for them to collect when they return.

Weekly times tables will be set and assessed through Times Table Rockstars.  https://ttrockstars.com/

Details can also be found below of the statutory spelling word list for Y5 & Y6. The spellings set will follow our school scheme and feature some of these words each week across the whole year.

MA tests will cover the entire KS2 curriculum to prepare children for their end of Key Stage assessments.

Tasks will be marked in class and any misconceptions addressed in lessons.

OPTIONAL: If children would like to complete any more tasks at home, there will be an optional homework grid sheet filled with project-based tasks that they can complete over each half term to match their learning in class.. This will be given at the start of each term and added below for your ease of reference.

PE Days - Spring Term 2024

Please note the change to our PE days in Spring. Our PE days will be Monday and Friday. Children should come to school wearing their correct PE kit and appropriate footwear. Please contact the office if you are unsure about uniform requirements.

Our learning this term:

Details of the topics we are studying this term can be found on the Medium Term Planner at the bottom of the page. These will be updated each term to show you our learning across the curriculum.

In Y6 we use knowledge organisers to support our learning in some of our subjects. We have them stuck into our subject books or on our desks so that we can refer back to them, use them as a revision tool or remind ourselves what we need to include in our work eg. writing to meet the expected standards. There are copies of the core subject organisers at the bottom of this page.
